Intimate Partner Violence

Intimate Partner Violence or "Dating Violence" is a big issue for today's teenagers. This form of violence has many different names yet it all means the same thing. Relationships come in all different forms ranging from typical dating patterns, to hook up behavior and "hanging out". This does not mean that dating violence has ended yet the context has just changed.

Violence exists in many forms and in adolescence can be very challenging to identify. In adolescence you are still learning what a healthy relationship even means. There are several types of violence and hopefully by the end of this you will understand the different forms and can help identify violence in your own relationships.

Types Of Violence

Physical- Hitting, Punching, Slapping, Pulling

Sexual Violence- forced intercourse, groping

Emotional Violence- name calling/ put downs

Threats and Intimidation- example "if you don't _____, I will _______ to you."

Possessiveness- "you are my girlfriend so you
can't wear that."

Verbal Abuse- yelling, swearing, name calling

The above are just some examples of the forms of violence, there are more, but are subjective; we could never make a complete list of examples. If you think it is abusive, it probably is.
