Being abused in your own home is traumatic and tragic. If you have just come to this country and do not know the customs and language, it is even more difficult. You don't have the usual resources to help you...family, friends, knowledge of the legal system, etc.
A very good first step is to call a domestic violence crisis center. We are here to help you. The Rape and Domestic Violence Crisis Center serves all of Merrimack County, but there are also 13 other crisis centers in the state, so help is there, no matter where you are. Help is free and confidential.
Remember that in an emergency, always call 9-1-1 for immediate help, especially if you think your children are in danger. You do not need to give your immigration status to anyone responding to your emergency. As the victim of a crime, you have the right to the same crime victim services as any crime victim born in the United States.
If you do not know your immigration status, you should call an immigration attorney. DO NOT CALL the INS. You may be able to get a green card to allow you to stay in the United States without your husband's help or knowledge because of the Violence Against Women Act. If you are undocumented and planning on getting a divorce you should contact an immigration attorney before getting a divorce. Help can be obtained by calling Catholic Charities at 889-9431 to reach their program for victims/survivors of domestic violence who are immigrants.
You can order a brochure about domestic violence and immigrant women from the NH Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence at 224-8893.
